Indestructible and ultra-light, our favorite cast-iron pan has a Guardian-exclusive discount now | Food
Many non-Amazon retailers are now offering Prime Day deals – and one of those best deals happens to be exclusive to Guardian readers. Field Company made the premium skillet that I said “fixed everything I hated about cast iron” in my five-star review, and the American-made cookware brand rarely goes on sale, but until end of June, everything on the site is 20% off with code FIELD20.
That means that perfect pan I reviewed, the No 5 Chef Skillet, has dropped from $125 to $100. At the risk of sounding like an ad, this is a very rare sale on a unique little pan you’ll buy for life. (Zero payment behind this endorsement – only a thorough and satisfying product test.)

I previously covered food at Bon Appétit and have tried a lot of the cookware out there. Among its wrist-straining peers, this is the rare cast-iron pan that feels nimble. At just 2.2lbs and 7.25in in diameter, it’s light enough for flipping breakfast eggs with one hand, swirling sauces, or popping in the oven for a deeply charming Dutch baby. A comparable-size Lodge weighs more than a pound more.
Cast iron is basically indestructible, naturally non-toxic, nonstick and only gets slicker the more you cook with it. Everything I made in the No 5 – eggs, chicken thighs, leafy greens, puff pastries – slid right off, even fresh out of the box. When we asked the pros at the Drexel Food Lab to test for the best non-toxic pans in the US, the team named Field Company’s the best preseasoned one. “If you’re new to cast iron and worried about a learning curve, this is a pan to consider,” they wrote. “We were surprised how easily we could cook eggs in a brand-new Field pan.”
Field Company’s Cast Iron Cleaning Kit
For cooking bigger meals, Field’s pan sets have the steepest discounts we’ve seen yet. With FIELD20 on top of an existing sale, you get nearly 40% off a bundle of its two top-selling pans (the No 8 and the family-sized No 10), now $292, down from $461. It includes a cleaning kit with organic seasoning oil, a bristle brush and chain mail scrubber. More than you need? On its own, Field’s No 8 pan (10.5in in diameter) is down from $165 to $132.

This unusually steep sale only lasts through end of June, so if you’ve been looking for an heirloom, I’d say now is your time to bite. Your future grandkids will thank you.
