Pharmacist says never eat 1 thing before bed – you won’t sleep
If you’re struggling to get to sleep at night, there are a number of different methods available to you, to help you wind down and get a better night sleep.
If you search the supermarket aisles or even ask a question to your search engine, there are dozens of different recomendations on how to get a better night’s sleep.
From eating or drinking specific items to trying to limit the use of phones, TVs or other screens before bed, there is lots of advice available for people.
But one medical professional is advising people to stay away from one common recommendation, warning that it could have the opposite effect.
UK-registered pharmacist Amir Singh, posted a video on TikTok rating a number of techniques that supposedly help sleep, and people were baffled by one of his warnings.
What food should you never eat before bed to help with sleep?
When asked, Dr Singh said he didn’t recommend people eating a banana before they head to bed for the night. Although some people think the food would help with sleep, due to its magnesium and potassium contents, it actually does the opposite, according to the pharmacist.
He said: “It’s like really high in sugar actually, so it’s probably going to keep you up.”
Another item he didn’t recommend using was having milk before bed, especially for people who are lactose intolerant. He said: ” Five, if you’re lactose intolerant, it’s an awful idea. We all had it like as kids before bed, so you might feel a bit nostalgic and it gets you to sleep.”
What does the pharmacist reccomend to help sleep better?
Instead of bananas or milk, Dr Singh reccomends two items for people looking to get some help falling to sleep each night.
When asked to rate the items out of ten, he said: “Taking antihistamines to feel sleepy. Ten, definitely help, you shouldn’t do it often. It’s fine if the antihistamines marketed specifically for sleep to do as a one-off if you’re struggling, you shouldn’t be doing it regularly.”
When asked about eye masks, he added: “Ten, it’s definitely going to help at least a little bit. It’s not going to cause any harm and it’ll get you into that complete darkness that you need to sleep.”
