The 12 makeup products I swear by after turning 50, from hydrating lip gloss to the perfect mirror | Makeup
I’ve always been a fan of wearing makeup. Not only is it a nice way to enhance the way I look naturally, but it offers creativity, self-expression and a comforting ritual. However, since I turned 50, my preferences have changed. I went from reveling in smoky eyes, funky eyeshadow shades and a bold lip to choosing makeup that seems more like, well, I’m not wearing any. This is mainly because I feel like the more makeup I wear, the older I look. And maybe because all of a sudden, I’m not as interested in attracting attention to myself. Which, you know, can be a bummer.
Vivian Baker, a makeup artist, who has worked with A-listers such as Bette Midler and Blake Lively said she encourages clients over 50 to keep experimenting with makeup. “Most women don’t realize they’ve subconsciously opted out of the fun of makeup as they’ve aged. We get caught up in ‘can’ and ‘cannot,’” she says.
Don’t be fooled by reels promising complete transformations, says makeup artist Kerry-Lou Hensen. “One of the biggest pitfalls is being influenced by unrealistic before-and-after images on social media. Lighting, angles, expressions, and often retouching, can create the illusion of dramatic results that simply aren’t achievable,” she says. Hensen’s suggested products for aging skin include a lightweight skin tint; a cream blush instead of a powder, which she says can help bring life back to skin; and a soft, blendable eyeliner that will not appear too harsh.
I’ve been doing a lot of experimenting, both with products and how comfortable I feel presenting myself to the world in what feels like a new phase of my life. Here then are the everyday standouts currently winning pole positions in my makeup bag and beyond.
Charlotte Tilbury Beautiful Skin Sunkissed Glow Bronzer

Charlotte Tilbury
Beautiful Skin Sunkissed Glow Bronzer
from $59

In my younger years as a lifeguard, sun care consisted of baby oil and Hawaiian Tropics SPF 2. Now, I am now a sunscreen addict. When summer arrives and I want to look all glowed up, I turn to this light, smooth cream-based bronzer that can be applied to both face and body with a brush, and somehow reads completely natural. It comes in four different colors; I keep a lighter hue for winter and a darker shade for summer.

Nars The Multiple

About five years ago, I realized powder blush was starting to look less natural on my aging skin and had a tendency to sink into wrinkles. “Cream formulas bring life back into the skin in a way powders often can’t,” says Hensen. I tried a bunch of cream and liquid blushes, but I just can’t quit The Multiple. Velvety smooth and lightweight, I swipe it over my cheekbones – though like the Miracle Balm, it can also work on eyelids and lips. I like the peachy pink, gold-flecked Orgasm Crave (Nars really is … cheeky).

Jones Road Miracle Balm

Jones Road
Miracle Balm
$38

Makeup legend Bobbi Brown launched Jones Road in 2020, and though not specifically geared towards women over 50, almost every middle-aged woman I know has gotten into these products.
The Miracle Balm is one of my all-time favorite products, full-stop, because it works as a highlighter, bronzer, blush or even a tinted moisturizer. I’ve been known to use it all over my face for a subtle glow, dab it on my cheekbones, use it as a refreshing lip gloss, or even smooth over my eyelids. But best of all, it almost acts like a photo filter for my fine lines, smoothing them out and giving me a subtle glow. Sometimes I just use it all over my naked skin to run errands or for a short jaunt around town. It comes in 15 different colors, and I have a shockingly large array of them.

Caliray Hideaway Under Eye Color Corrector

Caliray
Hideaway Under Eye Color Corrector

Sleep can be elusive during perimenopause, and that can lead to puffiness and dark circles. This light, brightening formula beautifully covers imperfections without getting cake-y or creasy. I dab a few drops under my eyes with the wand before my foundation, then use the included concealer brush to blend. Its ingredients are all certified non-toxic, and I like that the box is made from 100% recyclable materials.

Trinny London BFF De-Stress Tinted Serum

Hensen recommends shifting to lighter, hybrid foundations, which can help de-emphasize lines, dryness and texture. “There are now so many excellent skincare–makeup hybrids that deliver coverage,” she says. “These types of products even out the complexion while maintaining a fresh, skin-like finish.”
This tinted serum offers light coverage for red patches and uneven tone, yet mimics natural-looking skin. I also like that it includes hyaluronic acid, which many people use on its own for extra hydration, and generally gives my face an added glow. As my daytime go-to, I always apply it over my SPF.

Haus Labs Skin Tech Foundation

Haus Labs
Skin Tech Foundation
from $52

I’m a tad suspicious about using celeb-backed products, but Lady Gaga’s Haus Labs has proven to be a real contender in the beauty industry, boasting organic ingredients as well as being vegan, cruelty-free and fragrance-free. Skin Tech offers lightweight, moderate coverage, and it blurs my skin naturally. I like to wear this when I’m going out in the evenings, and it smooths well over my other skincare products. Though I was cautious about choosing the right color from the huge selection, the shade finder quiz on the website was right on. If it’s not the right shade, the brand offers a free swap.

Thrive Causemetics Brilliant Eye Brightener

When it comes to eyeshadow, I want a little lick of color and no mess. This creamy, shimmery stick hits the sweet spot. I like to swipe it over my lids, and sometimes I even lightly line my lower lids with it as well – where it doubles as a brightener. With 35 colors to choose from and no brush, it appeals to my low-maintenance side and can easily travel with me on a night out or to the office. Oh, and did I mention it’s also waterproof? A perfect partner for summer escapades.

Twenty/Twenty Beauty Full Brows Tinted Gel

Twenty/Twenty Beauty
Full Brows Tinted Gel

After nearly 25 years of plucking, waxing and trimming my brows into submission, it was a cruel joke to find that age substantially thins eyebrows. So, in addition to using this pro-growth formula from Nulastin daily to thicken them out, I’m completely addicted to this dual-action tint and taming gel. It makes my brows appear fuller and keeps them in place for hours at a time. I use the brown but you can get it in blonde and dark brown as well.

Kevyn Aucoin The Volume Mascara

Kevyn Aucoin
The Volume Mascara
from $32

My biggest makeup pet peeve? Clumpy mascara. Maybe it’s me, but I have had a terrible time finding a product that doesn’t need to be de-clumped with a Q-tip after application – until now. The Volume uses a super thin brush with small detailing to coat my lashes in a volume-inducing, extra pigmented formula – and I only need one coat.

The Outset Lip Oasis

I don’t know exactly when it happened, but I can no longer wear lipstick. It’s too thick and too pigmented, and it makes me uncomfortable. Plus, even the more moisturizing formulas tend to sink into the lines of my mouth. Gloss and balm are my new normal and I especially like this non-sticky, extremely hydrating gloss from Scarlett Johansson’s The Outset. True story: I had no idea this was a celebrity brand until after I had used and coveted it. It leaves a kiss of color, a hefty shine and it feels great on my lips. Plus, it comes in seven colors, so you can have a few for day-to-night application.

Tower 28 ShineOn Plumping Lip Jelly

ShineOn Plumping Lip Jelly
from $18

This brand-new plumping gloss is already one of my favorite products. A non-sticky, translucent, highly shiny gloss, this lip jelly uses a non-toxic, plant-based stimulant to make my lips look just a tad bit plumper. The first time I swiped it on with the applicator, I was not expecting the moderately intense prickly feeling that the company claims stimulates my natural circulation and boosts hyaluronic acid. It’s not painful, it doesn’t sting, but it’s not something you can ignore. Most importantly, though, my lips feel hydrated and the gentle formula feels thick enough to hide fine lines yet not cake-y enough to be goopy. I like the lighter pink Bitter Sweet color but also appreciate the clear Chill Heat.

Ilios Lighting Beauty Ring Mirror

Baker is adamant about the role of lighting when applying makeup. “I see women ‘disqualify’ themselves from wearing makeup simply because they can’t see what they’re doing. Once you can actually see your face, the door opens. You can finally prioritize what matters to you.”
Though she uses the nearly $1,100 Meira LUXe, which she likens to Restoration Hardware for your vanity, I opted for this more affordable mid-priced lighted mirror from Ilios. I can’t live without it. Ilios lets you choose from 1X and 5X magnification, but also offers three different color modes (cool, blend and warm) and five dimming levels to replicate natural daylight. I use this both when I apply my makeup (I tend to stick to the blend color mode), but also to apply my skincare products morning and night.
